1. Ketosis
The ketogenic diet (also known as the keto diet) is a low-carb diet that forces the body into ketosis. Ketosis is a metabolic state where the liver produces ketones in order to use fat as an alternative fuel source. In this state, the brain normally runs off glucose instead of acetate. When people follow a ketogenic diet, they attempt to mimic this state. There are two types of ketosis- endogenous and exogenous. Exogenous means that the person is consuming something that causes them to enter ketosis. An example would be taking ketone supplements orally. Endogenous means that the body naturally enters the ketogenic state. One way to achieve this is to have high levels of fats in the blood. Another is to starve the body of carbs, leading to an acidic environment. The goal of the ketogenic diet is to force the body into a state of ketosis, mimicking what happens when we eat only fat.
2. Ketosis Symptoms
One of the first symptoms of entering a ketogenic state is excessive hunger. This is due to increased insulin and decreased ghrelin hormones. Insulin is the hormone that tells our bodies to store sugar while ghrelin is the hormone that tells us to feel full. Because these hormones are out of balance, the body feels hungry constantly. Other symptoms of ketosis include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, nausea, constipation, and diarrhoea. These are all caused by the lack of carbohydrate intake. As we move further along in the ketogenic lifestyle, we begin to experience additional symptoms related to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, bone mineral loss, and even kidney stones. To avoid these side effects, it's important to stay well hydrated and monitor your urine output. If you do not drink enough water, you can develop mild to moderate dehydration. Dehydration causes the kidneys to retain water and salt, causing the body to become dehydrated.
3. Advantages Of A Ketogenic Diet
There are many advantages to following a ketogenic diet. First, if you're trying to lose weight, you'll need less calories to maintain your current weight. Second, it can help reduce inflammation in the body. Third, it may improve insulin sensitivity. Fourth, it may help lower cholesterol. Fifth, it can help lower blood pressure. Finally, it may promote neurogenesis. Neurogenesis is the production of new neurons inside the brain. Not only does it help build neural pathways, it may help treat depression.
